In this of walking distances, being carried away by routes, trails… companies can acquire vital importance. They won’t always be human. To each one of us life, circumstances, involves us in a different way. And it is quite normal that those calls pets (for example), go to share unconditionally much of our hours, days… experiences.
In my case I want to make it fully explicit what has been my experience in almost ten years with Bart (Labrador), since arriving at the family bosom, with three months of life.
Born in the City of Rio Cuarto (province of Córdoba) to the capital city of the province of Buenos Aires – La Plata –, and then settling in this Patagonia Argentina. A traveler of those: thousands of KMS., buses, automobiles, overnight in hotels, cabins, lodgings, etc. And not all are pleasurable experiences: in the city of La Plata we bear terrible floods in the year 2013, with many human losses… or a few days after arriving in Patagonia, the death of my wife.
For my son and me, Bart was a colleague of iron who helped us at all times to cope with these difficult times, also health issues, etc., etc. That is: When opting for “a pet”… is opted for a member of the family and all the experiences that will happen… without continuity solution… and that is the “problem”: the years are happening too fast. So you have to enjoy all those moments; It becomes a priority, they will never repeat… and thicken that chest of memories, that synthesis of love and feelings to which we and only we, will have access.
Don’t be afraid to get involved, make the decision to include familiarly “a furry four-legged”, opens the doors to a universe that humans are forgetting: share… share in looks, games, experiences, trips… let’s leave a little side to cybernetics, The screens, the mobile… let’s try love, Caress… will be a beautiful example for children, grandchildren… life experiences.
The work of the Life dogs
The Argentine canine School of Aquatic Rescue (EACSA), is a non-profit organization founded in the year 2003 in the city of Mar del Plata, whose main objective was based on the training of dogs of the Newfoundland breed to implement them in rescues and to provide A more support to the lifeguards in towing tasks.
Currently the EACSA team fulfils function for free on the beach located between the streets Mugaburu and the coast, new operating place from 2012. Previously, it served from 2003 to 2011 in the area of La Perla, Balcarce and La Costa spas, averaging 25 rescues per season.
The choice of the Newfoundland Race finds foundation in its intrinsic spirit of fidelity towards the man, accompanied by an affinity for the water and a great docileness, which makes it the perfect companion when having the possibility of choosing a dog to carry Perform aquatic tasks. In addition to its undisputed characteristics of behavior, the Newfoundland possesses physical conditions that position it as the best towing dogs, reaching 70 kilos of weight, which gives them the possibility of towing four people dead weight or Boats as semi-rigids of more than four meters in length and six occupants.
Another of its main characteristics is the fur, which gives it two important virtues for the breed: the first is that by means of an oil that generates its own hair, the dog is practically waterproof, and also has two layers of hair: one of wool and another of long fur , which combined trap air bubbles providing a great buoyancy. On the other hand, their ears cover their ears well protecting the water intake and their legs are very large with the ability to distenderlas during the swim and use an epithelial extension that forms an interdigital membrane. Its size, its strength and its jaw make it a strong animal, and it ends up gathering the best conditions for the aquatic rescue.
While all the virtues already mentioned plus an innate instinct of help make these animals are outstanding rescuers, we must mention that their work is a complement for lifeguards in specific situations and very particular, such as towing Of simultaneous victims, boats or when the lifeguards is exceeded by the
tow distance and the weight of one or more victims, and it is at that time when the intervention of a rescue dog can provide the necessary support to carry it out.
The training begins from an early age, developing obedience skills to create the link between the dog and the master. Creating that union is extremely important, as tomorrow the dog will be our partner at a critical moment of a rescue and that bond created can sometimes mean the success of the task we want to perform.
This union will be forged throughout the life of the animal on three pillars: obedience, physical training and finally, and more importantly, the cohesion of the binomial of work (trainer-dog).
Obedience begins to be strongly established between the six months and the year of age in conjunction with domination exercises, which are necessary to accentuate our dominance as a dog leader. These exercises consist of games and voice commands that, used at the time and the right situation, generate a mental reflection on the dog that will mark it in adulthood. This is how we managed to make an animal of approximately 70 kilos behave in a docile and obedient manner.
Physical training is a stage that begins after the year of age, where we started to build the muscles, endurance and aerobic capacity of the animals. We must remember that a well trained aquatic rescue dog can oscillate in a mark of 1:40 to 1:50 minutes in the hundred meters and tow a victim of 90 kilos in less than 4 minutes in the hundred meters, depending on the conditions of the rescue.
The initial physical preparation of a rescue dog takes place between the first year of age and the two years. This is combined with water training and rescue maneuvers, giving the two years a dog that is operative in its first stages of training. It is not advisable to shorten these times because although we have a dog of great size still would not be formed its definitive physical structure.
For the final formation of the binomial of work, and completing the two aforementioned pillars, we must bear in mind that the link that will unite the dog and the coach will begin to forge to the 45 days of life with the choice of the puppy and continue to strengthened day by day with the Exercises of domination, games, link and timeshare.
